Songs and Stories of Sanctuary
Vibrant Voices (2025) is a collaboration between myself and One World Choir, a wonderful refugee choir in Sheffield.
We wanted to explore choir members’ reflections on life in sheffield, so came together to make a series of assisted portraits alongside text and the lyrics from some of the songs they sing. This work was presented at Migration Matters Festival in June ‘25, and offers an alternative representation of migration that perhaps differs from that we are given from the mainstream media and our politicians.
In their own words:
“We live in and around Sheffield and at the same time, we are proudly international, with members from many different countries around the world. The choir grew out of an idea to bring together people seeking asylum, refugees and other local people to sing and socialise together.
From very small beginnings early in 2018, we have grown into a vibrant, performing choir. In addition to creating a community of warm friendship, a family many would say, we like to showcase the talent and culture of our members to a wide variety of audiences. Singing in different languages, such as Swahili, Arabic, Yoruba, Ukrainian and Farsi can be challenging, but we love it!”
