About Jack Owen

Jack is a photographer, socially engaged practitioner and community artist from Sheffield, with a particular interest in collaborative approaches within photography. He completed an MA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at University of the Arts, London in June 2024, graduating with Distinction, and currently works on multiple community level creative arts projects as well as freelance offering event, family and corporate photography services.

Jack is expert at working with people creatively, using both film and digital cameras in participative ways to rebalance power structures and explore representation. He believes photographs help us to think and reflect on the human experience, and to interrogate mainstream, reductive ways of thinking about who we are.

Recent work includes The Plough & The Pick, a project exploring farming communities of the Dearne Valley, and Sent North, a collaborative zine project with young Afghan refugees living in a hotel in Doncaster.

Alongside his individual practice, Jack co-leads fILMfAM, a community film and photography project on the Gleadless Valley Estate in Sheffield. This work involves running weekly photography groups and regular community sharing events, including exhibitions, workshops, pop-up studios and more. Find out more about fILMfAM here.

Jack is also a co-director of Voz Theatre, a Sheffield based arts organisation exploring the intersections around partiocipative theatre and visual arts. Over recent years this work has involved projects exploring ‘Memories of Home’ with South Asian women as well as current work developing visual work with Sheffield’s Deaf community. More on Voz here.

Jack offers significant community development experience alongside his creative practice, and can offer charitable organisations and community groups a sensitive, empathetic method of exploring experience within vulnerable communities, borne out of his 20 years work on community projects around the world.
