Kenya Gold (2015):For this series I spent an extended period with artisanal gold miners in Rosterman, an area of western Kenya which has been mined for gold for hundreds of years, including by the British during colonial times. These days small teams of men and women work together to sort, crush, sieve and filter the mud and rocks such that the tiny specs of precious metal reveal themselves and can be graded and sold. It's extremely physical work for little reward - the real added value comes later in the supply chain at the dealerships in Nairobi, Dar Es Salaam and beyond.
